Nanny Insurance

Caring for someone elses children can be a high risk occupation. A carer can be sued in the event a child is injured or suffers and illness while in care. In fact sometimes a carer can be held liable even if they have not been negligent.

Nanny insurance includes public liability insurance covering nannies in the event of an accident to a child in their care leading to death or disability and for which they can be held legally liable.

Some things that nanny insurance may cover include:

Personal injury including food poisoning or broken bone due to for example tripping over a toy with a baby in your arms

Property damage - e.g. you are cooking in the kitchen, go away to attend to a child and come back to find the kitchen on fire. This damage is covered under the families house insurance policy but the insurer may seek to recover the cost from nanny.

When you employ a nanny it's worthwhile asking them if they have nanny insurance. If they don't - some carers are not aware that they need it - it is worthwhile asking them  to take a policy out. Some parents even suggest that they will assist the carer with payment of the premium and then deduct the cost of the premium from the carers renumeration. All of this information should be covered and fully agreed by both parties in the Employment Contract.
