Tell us a little bit about yourself? I'm 19 years old, living in Mulgoa (near Penrith) with my parents and two little brothers who I love to death. I attend the Sydney Conservatorium of Music studying Music Education. I play saxophone, piano and guitar. I major in musicology, which involves academic research into musical history - this involves lots of essay writing, original research and score analysis. I study French as well, and am semi-fluent. I also love drama - I have been involved in productions and I love going to see live theatre! I also like to paint and make jewellery.
What is it about caring for children that appeals to you? I love the innocence and purity of children, and their complete honesty. Children's minds are amazingly open and can often give insights or points of view that adults overlook! I think each child is unique and should have his or her own opportunity to explore their talents.
Tell us a little bit about your love of music and how you integrate it into your care for children?
I've been playing piano since I was in kindergarten and as an adult now, I am eternally thankful to my parents for encouraging me to commit to music. Children take well to music eduation as music is like a language - children take to learning music easily. I also believe the use of music can help learning in other academic areas, and even general cognitive development. And above everything else - it's fun and kids love it! What do you feel are some of the key challenges nannies and babysitters face today and how do you deal with some of the challenges you face in babysitting/nannying?
I think young children today have a dependency on technology and while this is definitely a good thing in some instances, sometimes children need to go outside and play or play dress-ups and make-believe! I also do not like the idea of labelling children as 'problem' or 'difficult' children, and think every child needs attention and care. What key advice would you give to a parent looking to recruit a babysitter or nanny?
Find a babysitter with the same views and beliefs as you, because they are going to have a hand in your child's upbringing.
Who or what inspires you?
Zoltan Kodaly and Carl Orff, two musicians who formed revolutionary methods of teaching music to young children. I also admire the writers and performers on educational children's tv shows. And, of course, my mum is my source of all knowledge related to childminding - she is a teacher herself and a very good one at that!
